Taurasi shares important similarities in style, structure and ageing potential with its cousin from the north – Barolo. The grape variety, Aglianico (100%), likely migrated from Greece to the south of Italy in the 7th century and decided to stay.
The 2015 vintage was exceptionally good for Taurasi.
Fruit from a 25-year old vineyard parcel called Casale in Paternopoli.
Thediurnal range allows the fruit to retain the acidity, and the calcareous soils with limestone have enough clay to protect them from dehydration, allowing for a slow but steady ripening.
Alcoholic fermentation with long maceration at controlled temperatures in stainless steel, after which the wine is matured for 14 months in 25 hectoliters French oak barrels (three years old) and the remaining time in bottle.
Deep, vibrant ruby red colour, with violet hints and a wonderfully intense bouquet of black cherries, plums, blueberries, violets, rose petals and spices. On the palate these aromas are complemented by impressions of balsamic, lavender, tobacco and earthy notes. Full bodied, yet elegant with ripe but firm tannins. Harmonious and balanced with a particularly long finish. Drink now and through 2036.
